Deep Tissue or Thai Massage for a Stiff Back?

Deep tissue massage provided at a Bangkok home by Jewel Wellness Bangkok

In short

Choose deep tissue if one spot will not release: it is firm, focused work on specific areas, from 1,400 baht. Choose traditional Thai if your whole back and hips feel stiff and you want to move more freely: it is dry pressure with assisted stretching on a mat, from 900 baht.

These are the two treatments people most often choose between for a stiff back, and they are genuinely different in method, in what they feel like, and in what they are good at. Picking the wrong one is not a disaster, but it does mean paying for an hour that was not quite what you needed.

The short answer

If one spot will not release, choose deep tissue. If your whole back and hips feel stiff and you want to move more freely, choose traditional Thai.

What each one actually is

Deep tissue massage is focused, firm work on specific areas of tension. It is done on a table with oil, and the therapist spends the session on the areas you nominate rather than covering the whole body. It suits persistent knots, sports recovery, and chronic neck and back stiffness from long hours at a desk. Sixty minutes is ฿1,400, ninety is ฿1,600, two hours is ฿1,800.

Traditional Thai massage is dry pressure with assisted stretching, on a mat, with no oil, and you stay clothed. The therapist uses palms, thumbs, forearms and sometimes feet, and moves your limbs and spine through ranges you would not reach yourself. It suits stiffness through the back, shoulders and hips, and anyone who wants to move more freely rather than simply feel looser. Sixty minutes is ฿900, ninety is ฿1,100, two hours is ฿1,300.

How they feel, which is the part that surprises people

Deep tissue is more locally intense. The therapist stays on one area and works into it, and a knot being released has a distinct deep ache that most people find satisfying. Soreness the following day is normal and expected.

Thai massage is more physically involving. You are being moved rather than lying still, and the sensation is stretch and broad pressure rather than concentrated point work. People often describe it as more tiring at the time and looser afterwards.

Which for which complaint

What you haveBetter choice
One knot between the shoulder bladesDeep tissue
Whole back stiff, hips tight, poor rangeTraditional Thai
Lower back from sitting in trafficEither — Thai for stiffness, deep tissue for a sore spot
Neck and shoulders from a laptopOffice syndrome massage, or deep tissue
Recovery after the gymDeep tissue
You want to feel able to move againTraditional Thai

For the desk-work pattern specifically there is a third option that beats both: office syndrome massage, which is the same depth as deep tissue and the same price from sixty minutes up, but starts from the neck, upper back, shoulders and forearms rather than from wherever you point. It is ฿1,200 for an hour. There is more in office syndrome in Bangkok.

Duration matters more than most people expect

For a back complaint, ninety minutes is usually better value than sixty. An hour tends to be spent reaching the area rather than working on it, particularly with Thai massage, which follows a sequence through the whole body. At ฿1,100 for ninety minutes of Thai or ฿1,600 for ninety of deep tissue, the extra half hour is where the difference is.

Practicalities at home

Deep tissue needs a table, so about two metres by two of cleared floor. Thai massage is on a mat and needs roughly two by one — less space, but floor space specifically. Do not eat a large meal in the hour before Thai massage; the sequence includes compression through the abdomen.

When neither is appropriate

Deep tissue is not appropriate over an acute injury, an inflamed joint, or where you take blood-thinning medication without advice. For Thai massage, tell us before booking if you are pregnant, have had recent surgery, have a fracture, osteoporosis, a slipped disc or a history of deep-vein thrombosis — the stretching is the reason that list is longer.

And for either: pain that travels down a leg, numbness, tingling or weakness needs a doctor or a physiotherapist first. See lower-back ache from commuting for how to tell the difference.

Book whichever suits, compare all twelve on the services page, or start at the home page.

Frequently asked questions

Which one hurts more?

Neither should hurt, but they are intense in different ways. Deep tissue is locally intense because the therapist stays on one area, and a knot releasing has a deep ache most people find satisfying. Thai massage is more physically involving because you are being stretched and moved rather than lying still.

Will I be sore afterwards?

After deep tissue work, quite possibly the following day, and that is normal and stated on the treatment page. After traditional Thai most people feel looser rather than sore, though it can be more tiring at the time.

Do I undress for either of them?

For deep tissue yes, to your comfort, since it is done on a table with oil and you are covered apart from the area being worked on. For traditional Thai no: it uses no oil at all and is worked through loose clothing on a mat.

Is there a better option for desk-related stiffness?

Usually yes. Office syndrome massage is the same depth as deep tissue and the same price from sixty minutes up, at 1,200 baht, but it starts from the neck, upper back, shoulders and forearms rather than from wherever you point. For a laptop-related stiff back it tends to beat both.
