Hotel Massage in Bangkok: A Guide for Travellers

In short

Hotel in-room massage in Bangkok starts at 1,100 baht for sixty minutes. A folding table needs about two metres by one plus standing room, which many standard rooms manage once an armchair is moved; where it does not fit, the treatment is worked on a mat or in a chair instead. Your therapist reports to reception and follows whatever your hotel asks of a visitor.

You have landed, checked in, and discovered that the thing you most want is not a bar or a rooftop but ninety minutes of not moving. That is an extremely common way to feel on a first night in Bangkok, and it is the reason in-room massage exists.

This is what the arrangement actually involves, from a visitor's point of view: what fits in a hotel room, what the hotel needs from you, and how to choose a treatment when you have never booked one here before.

What fits in a hotel room

The constraint is floor space, not permission. A folding massage table needs roughly two metres by one, plus standing room on both sides. A standard Bangkok hotel room, once the bed, the desk and the luggage rack are in it, often does not have that — and a junior suite almost always does.

Nothing is lost if it does not. The treatments split into two groups, and the ones that need no table are not lesser versions of the ones that do:

  • No table required. Head, neck and shoulder massage is worked seated and through clothing, with no oil, from ฿900 for forty-five minutes. Foot massage needs an armchair and somewhere to put your feet up, from ฿1,000 for an hour.
  • Table or floor mat. Hotel in-room massage covers the oil treatments and traditional Thai, from ฿1,100 for sixty minutes, ฿1,400 for ninety and ฿1,800 for two hours.

Traditional Thai massage is worked on a mat on the floor in any case, so a room with no space for a table can still take it. That decision is made in the room by the therapist rather than on the booking form — but if a table matters to you, say so when you book and we will tell you honestly whether the room sounds big enough.

What your hotel needs from you

Bangkok hotels differ more than visitors expect. Some register a visitor at the desk and wave them through. Some require the guest to come down to reception and walk the therapist up. A few decline outside practitioners altogether, usually because they operate a spa of their own.

We cannot know in advance which yours is, so the booking form asks for the hotel name and your room number, and your therapist reports to reception and follows whatever the hotel asks. If you are unsure of your hotel's position, the front desk will tell you in one question, and it is worth asking before you book rather than after a therapist has travelled across the city.

One practical note for anyone in a serviced apartment or an aparthotel rather than a hotel proper: those buildings are usually run like condominiums, with a juristic office and a visitor book, so the home and condominium arrangement is the one that applies.

Choosing a treatment on your first visit

Two patterns cover most arrivals.

If you have just come off a long flight, the problem is usually circulation and a stiff upper back rather than deep muscular tension. Something flowing and warm does more than something forceful: Thai oil massage at ฿1,000 for an hour, or foot massage if your legs and ankles have swollen. There is more detail in shoulder tension after a long flight.

If you have been here several days and have been walking the city, the complaint is almost always feet, calves and lower back. Foot massage is the obvious answer and the one most visitors book twice.

What we would steer a first-time guest away from is deep tissue massage on night one. It is a genuinely firm treatment, it is sometimes uncomfortable while it happens, and jet lag is not the state in which to find out whether you like it. It will still be there on day three.

Timing, cost and the things visitors ask about

We work around the clock, which is the single most useful fact for anyone whose body clock is six hours out. The earliest we can reach you is ninety minutes from the time you ask, and that is about traffic rather than distance — the same trip across Sukhumvit is a different proposition at six in the evening and at eleven at night.

There is no travel surcharge in any of the twelve districts we cover, so the price you see is the price. The service areas page lists all twelve with an arrival estimate for each.

On what the therapist brings and on what happens if your room turns out to be too small — the short answers are everything including fresh linen, and a seated treatment instead. Payment is arranged when we confirm the booking and we will tell you the options then; the amount is the one shown on your request, with nothing added to it. The longer answers are in the FAQ below and on the hotel massage page.

What arrives, and what you need to do

Nothing, is the short answer to the second part. You do not need to move furniture, find towels or prepare anything.

Your therapist brings a folding table or a mat, fresh linen and towels for every booking, oil where the treatment uses it, and everything needed to leave the room as they found it. Hotel towels are not used and hotel linen is not involved.

What is useful from you is thirty seconds of information when they arrive: where you would like the table, whether there is anything they should know, and how firm you want it. On that last point — say something during the session if it is wrong. Too firm is not something to put up with politely, and too light means the hour is not doing what you booked it for. One sentence changes it immediately.

If you are having an oil treatment, you undress to whatever you are comfortable with while the therapist is turned away or out of the room, and you are covered by a towel for the whole session with only the area being worked uncovered. If that is not something you want in a hotel room, the seated treatments involve no undressing at all and are complete treatments rather than compromises.

What this is not

Worth saying plainly, because visitors to Bangkok are sometimes unsure what they are booking. This is a therapeutic massage service that comes to your room. Our therapists are professional therapists doing a job of work, the treatment list is the treatment list, and a booking that is made on any other basis will be declined on the doorstep.

If that is the service you want, you can send a request with your hotel, your room and a time, and we will reply to confirm a therapist is free before anything is fixed. The full treatment list with prices is on the home page, and hotel, condo or office compares the three settings if you are deciding between them.

Frequently asked questions

Will a massage table fit in my hotel room?

Often, once an armchair or a luggage rack is moved, and your therapist does the moving. A table needs roughly two metres by one plus standing room on both sides. Where it will not fit, the treatment is worked on a mat on the floor, which is how traditional Thai massage is done in any case, or seated in a chair. Tell us the hotel and room type and we will tell you honestly whether it sounds big enough.

Do I need to tell my hotel in advance?

It is worth one question at the front desk before you book. Most Bangkok hotels register a visitor at reception and that is the end of it, some ask the guest to come down and collect them, and a small number decline outside practitioners because they run their own spa. Give us the hotel name and your room number on the form and your therapist follows whatever the hotel asks.

How quickly can someone reach my hotel?

Ninety minutes from the time you ask is the earliest, and that is about traffic rather than distance. The same journey across Sukhumvit is a different proposition at six in the evening and at eleven at night, which is why the estimate against each area is a range. We work around the clock, so the hour itself is rarely the limiting factor.

What should I book straight after a long flight?

Something flowing rather than something firm. Foot massage at 1,000 baht for sixty minutes if your ankles and calves have swollen, or Thai oil massage at 1,000 baht for a warm full-body treatment. We would steer you away from deep tissue on night one: it is genuinely firm, it can leave you sore, and thirty hours without proper sleep is not the state in which to find out whether you like it.

Is anything added to the price?

No. There is no travel surcharge in any of the twelve districts we cover, no night rate and no weekend rate, so the amount shown on your request is the amount. Payment is arranged when we confirm the booking and we will tell you the options then. Tipping is not required and is never added.
