Jet Lag in Bangkok: The First Forty-Eight Hours

In short

Book a massage for an hour or two before you intend to sleep rather than on arrival. A session in the early afternoon is an efficient way to fall asleep at three and wake at four in the morning, which is the opposite of what you want. What shifts a body clock is daylight early, eating on local time, and not napping after three in the afternoon.

Bangkok is seven hours ahead of London, six ahead of Berlin, and thirteen ahead of New York. That last one is the brutal direction: you arrive at night, feel entirely fine, and then come apart at four in the morning.

Massage will not reset a body clock. What it can do is take the physical edge off a flight and make the first night's sleep more likely, and the timing of it matters more than the treatment you choose.

What the flight itself does

Separate from the time-zone problem, eleven hours in a seat produces three fairly specific things.

Swelling in the feet and lower legs, because you have been immobile with your knees bent. A stiff upper back and neck, from a headrest that was the wrong shape and a few hours asleep at an angle. And general dehydration, which makes everything above feel worse than it is.

Those respond well to a massage. The time-zone disruption does not respond to anything much except light, food timing and patience.

Book it for the evening, not on arrival

The instinct on landing is to get a massage immediately. It is usually the wrong call.

If you arrive in the morning or early afternoon, the thing that will help most is staying awake and outside until a normal bedtime. A massage at two in the afternoon is a very efficient way to fall asleep at three, which is precisely what you are trying not to do.

Book it instead for an hour or two before you intend to sleep. We work around the clock and the earliest we can reach you is ninety minutes from the time you ask, so a session at nine in the evening is an easy thing to arrange on the day. That timing turns the treatment into part of getting to sleep rather than a competitor with it.

If you land late at night, the calculation flips and a session shortly after check-in is a good idea.

Which treatment after a flight

Something flowing rather than something forceful. Your tissue is not tight from overuse; your circulation has been sitting still.

  • Foot massage, ฿1,000 for sixty minutes, if the obvious complaint is ankles and calves. It needs no undressing and no table, so it works in any hotel room.
  • Thai oil massage, ฿1,000 for sixty minutes, for a full-body treatment that is warm and continuous.
  • Head, neck and shoulder massage, ฿900 for forty-five minutes, if it is specifically your neck and the base of your skull.

What to avoid on night one is deep tissue massage. It is firm, it can leave you sore the next day, and a body that has not slept properly in thirty hours is not well placed to tell you whether it is enjoying it. Day three, if you still want it.

The things that actually move a body clock

Worth stating plainly, since the massage is the pleasant part rather than the effective part:

  • Daylight early. Get outside in the morning, even briefly. It is the strongest signal your body has.
  • Eat on local time from the first meal, even without much appetite.
  • Do not nap after three in the afternoon, however reasonable it seems at the time.
  • Treat the first night as a write-off. Most people sleep badly on night one regardless, and expecting it removes half the frustration.

Two or three days is normal for a seven-hour shift. Coming from the Americas, give it four.

Booking it from a hotel

Give us the hotel name and your room number on the form, and your therapist reports to reception and follows whatever your hotel asks of a visitor. There is no travel surcharge in any of the twelve districts we cover, and the service areas page has an arrival estimate for each — useful at six in the evening, when a short distance is not a short journey.

The guide to hotel massage covers what fits in a room and what your hotel needs from you, and shoulder tension after a long flight goes further into the neck and shoulder side of it.

If your flight lands after midnight, arriving late at night covers that case on its own. You can send a request once you know your evening, and every treatment with its price is on the home page.

Frequently asked questions

Should I book a massage as soon as I land?

Usually not. If you arrive in the morning or early afternoon, the thing that helps most is staying awake and outside until a normal bedtime, and a massage at two in the afternoon is a very efficient way to fall asleep at three. Book it for an hour or two before you intend to sleep instead. If you land late at night, the calculation flips and a session after check-in is a good idea.

Does massage help with jet lag?

It helps with the flight rather than with the time zone. Eleven hours immobile produces swelling in the feet and lower legs, a stiff upper back and neck, and general dehydration, and those respond well to treatment. The body-clock disruption itself responds to light, food timing and patience rather than to anything a therapist can do.

Which treatment is best after a long flight?

Something flowing rather than something forceful, because your circulation has been sitting still rather than your tissue being overworked. Foot massage at 1,000 baht for sixty minutes if the complaint is ankles and calves, Thai oil massage at 1,000 baht for a warm full-body treatment, or head, neck and shoulder massage at 900 baht for forty-five if it is specifically your neck.

Can I book one in the middle of the night?

Yes. We operate around the clock and a two in the morning booking is an ordinary one, at the same price as the same session in the afternoon. There is no night rate. The earliest we can reach you is ninety minutes from the time you ask, so it is worth sending the request from the airport rather than from the end of the bed.
