Standing All Day in Bangkok: Feet, Calves and Lower Back

Foot and lower-leg massage in an armchair at the end of a day spent standing

In short

Standing still for hours stops the calf muscle pumping blood back up your legs, so the feet and ankles swell and the calves hold a low-level contraction all day. Meanwhile the lower back holds you upright and you shift weight onto one hip, which is why the ache is so often worse on one side. Foot massage at 1,000 baht for sixty minutes covers the region the problem lives in.

Office syndrome gets all the attention, and it is a desk-worker's problem. The opposite complaint is at least as common in Bangkok and almost never written about: the ache that comes from being upright for nine hours.

Teachers, retail and hospitality staff, nurses, people who run their own shop, anyone whose day is spent on a hard floor. It produces a different pattern from desk work and it responds to different treatment.

Why standing still is harder than walking

Walking is movement, and movement pumps blood back up your legs — the calf muscle is doing the pumping every time it contracts. Standing still removes that. Blood pools, the feet and ankles swell slightly through the day, and the calves stay in low-level contraction for hours without ever shortening or lengthening properly.

Meanwhile your lower back is holding you upright, and because standing still is boring you shift weight onto one hip, then the other, for hours. That asymmetry is why the ache is so often worse on one side.

Bangkok adds two things to this. Floors are hard — tile and polished concrete almost everywhere, with none of the give of carpet. And the heat means you are already dealing with dilated blood vessels and more swelling than you would get doing the same job somewhere cooler.

The pattern it produces

  • Feet that ache along the arch, worst in the first steps of the morning.
  • Tight, solid calves, often tender to press.
  • A lower back that hurts more after standing than after sitting — the reverse of the desk-work pattern.
  • Swollen ankles by evening, improving overnight.

That last one is worth a note. Mild swelling that goes down by morning is ordinary. Swelling in one leg only, swelling with heat or redness, or swelling that does not settle overnight are reasons to see a doctor rather than book a massage.

What helps most

Foot massage is the obvious treatment and the right one, at ฿1,000 for sixty minutes, ฿1,300 for ninety. It covers the feet, ankles and lower legs with warm oil, which is exactly the region the problem lives in. You stay dressed from the waist up and it can be done seated, so it is the easiest treatment to fit anywhere.

If the lower back is as much of a problem as the legs, go longer and wider. Thai oil massage at ฿1,200 for ninety minutes covers the whole body including the back and legs, and traditional Thai massage at ฿1,100 for ninety adds the assisted stretching, which is genuinely useful for hips that have not changed position all day.

For a specific, stubborn tightness in one calf or one side of the lower back, deep tissue massage at ฿1,400 for an hour is the targeted option. It is firm, and worth knowing that before booking it.

The things that help between sessions

Massage relieves tissue that has already tightened. These change how much tightens in the first place, and over a month they do more:

  • Shift your weight deliberately rather than drifting onto one hip. Alternating is the point.
  • Use a footrest or a low step if you can, and put one foot up on it for a few minutes at a time. It takes the lower back out of a fixed arch.
  • Raise your legs for ten minutes when you get in, above hip height. It does more for the swelling than anything a therapist can do.
  • Replace the shoes before they are obviously finished. Cushioning fails long before the upper looks worn, and a hard Bangkok floor is unforgiving about it.

Booking it after a shift

The useful thing about an outcall service for this particular complaint is that you do not have to stand up again and travel to it. We work around the clock and can reach you ninety minutes from the time you ask, which makes a session at nine or ten at night an ordinary booking rather than a special request. Late-night massage and what around the clock means covers how that works in practice.

There is no travel surcharge in any of the twelve districts we cover, and the service areas page lists them with arrival estimates. If the ache is lower back rather than legs, lower back ache from commuting covers the overlap.

If the ache sits higher than the lower back, a tight upper back after the gym covers that instead. Every treatment and price is on the home page, and you can send a request when you know which evening suits.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my legs ache more from standing than from walking?

Because walking is movement and movement pumps blood back up your legs, with the calf muscle doing the pumping every time it contracts. Standing still removes that, so blood pools, the ankles swell through the day, and the calves stay in low-level contraction for hours without ever properly shortening or lengthening.

Which massage is best for tired legs and feet?

Foot massage, at 1,000 baht for sixty minutes or 1,300 for ninety. It covers the feet, ankles and lower legs with warm oil, which is exactly where the problem lives, and you stay dressed from the waist up. If the lower back is as much of a problem as the legs, Thai oil massage at 1,200 baht for ninety minutes covers the whole body instead.

Should I be worried about swollen ankles?

Mild swelling that goes down overnight is ordinary after a day on your feet, particularly in this heat. Swelling in one leg only, swelling with heat or redness, or swelling that does not settle by morning are all reasons to see a doctor rather than book a massage. Mention anything like that in the booking notes.

What helps between sessions?

Shift your weight deliberately rather than drifting onto one hip, use a footrest or low step and put one foot up on it for a few minutes at a time, raise your legs above hip height for ten minutes when you get in, and replace your shoes before they are obviously finished. Cushioning fails long before the upper looks worn.
